SSHS Associate Board Member

Posted: 11/26/2025

The Associate Board of the South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS) is a volunteer group committed to strengthening the organization’s fundraising capacity and providing hands-on support for essential shelter programs and events. Associate Board Members play an important role in raising critical funds, expanding community awareness, and volunteering directly in support of SSHS’s mission to protect and care for animals throughout the South Suburban region. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about animal welfare and willing to contribute consistently through financial support, event participation, and in-person volunteer work.

Membership on the Associate Board offers meaningful engagement with the lifesaving work of SSHS. Members connect with other committed supporters, gain access to exclusive volunteer opportunities, and are recognized by SSHS at events and in select communications. By participating in the Associate Board, members have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of animals and families across the community.

Associate Board Members are expected to actively participate in the organization’s programs and fundraising efforts. Members attend regularly scheduled board meetings—typically quarterly or bi-monthly—promote and attend major fundraising events such as the annual Gala and adoption events, and complete mandatory annual volunteer participation. Volunteer work may take place at the shelter, at adoption events, at the Gala, or at other SSHS in-person events such as outreach activities, community clinics, or fundraising gatherings. Members may also participate in committee work that supports event planning, outreach, membership engagement, or fundraising needs.

In addition to the time commitment, Associate Board Members must meet a mandatory annual give/get requirement. This financial commitment may be fulfilled through a personal donation, funds raised through peer-to-peer or individual fundraising campaigns, sponsorships or contributions secured from employers, family, friends, or community contacts, or through ticket purchases for SSHS fundraising events. In-kind or monetary donations made in honor of the member may also fulfill part of this requirement. The specific annual amount is determined by SSHS and shared during onboarding.

Candidates for the Associate Board should demonstrate a strong passion for animal welfare and support for rescue and adoption. Members must be at least 21 years old, active within their community or profession, dependable, and comfortable engaging with the public on behalf of SSHS. While residency in the South Suburban region is preferred, it is not required. Because Associate Board Members serve as public representatives of SSHS, all members must adhere to the organization’s code of conduct, volunteer policies, and conflict-of-interest guidelines.

By joining the Associate Board of SSHS, members make a meaningful commitment to advancing animal welfare and supporting the ongoing success of the organization’s programs, events, and community initiatives.
